Avoiding Sugar Doesn’t Mean You’re Safe from Diabetes

Many people believe that “diabetes only comes from eating too many sweets.”In reality, avoiding sugary foods doesn’t guarantee protection from diabetes. There are several other factors that can raise your blood sugar levels and affect how efficiently your body uses insulin.

  • Age 40 and above : As you get older, your metabolism and insulin sensitivity naturally decrease.
  • Male gender : Men are generally at a higher risk of developing diabetes than women.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) of 23 kg/m² or higher : Indicates excess weight, which contributes to insulin resistance.
  • Waist circumference above the healthy range : Over 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women increases insulin resistance risk.
  • High blood pressure : Hypertension and diabetes often occur together since they share related metabolic and vascular issues.
  • Family history of diabetes : Having parents or siblings with diabetes significantly raises your risk.

Sweet foods are just one of many contributing factors to diabetes. If you also have other habits — such as not exercising, being under stress, sleeping too little, or frequently consuming refined carbohydrates — your blood sugar can rise even without eating sugary desserts.

Avoiding sweets doesn’t mean you’re safe from diabetes. The disease can develop from a combination of factors — genetics, lifestyle, and overall health. To lower your risk, focus on balanced eating, regular exercise, adequate rest, and periodic health checkups to detect any early warning signs.
