Why Am I Losing So Much Hair?

Why Am I Losing So Much Hair?

With roughly 100,000 strands on the head and new hair constantly growing in, this amount of loss usually goes unnoticed.

As we get older, the density and thickness of our hair naturally decrease. Hair is typically at its fullest around age 30, after which the hair cycle begins to shorten. This leads to more frequent shedding and gradually finer strands. Over time, the follicles may stop producing new hair altogether, resulting in visibly thinning areas or balding.

Hair loss can develop slowly or appear suddenly. It may be temporary or permanent, and although it’s more common in older adults, significant hair shedding can also occur in younger individuals.

Hereditary hair loss is the most common cause. Family history, combined with factors like stress and pollution, can trigger hair thinning. Male hormones (androgens) also play a major role in regulating the hair growth cycle.

Severe illness, surgery, or emotional stress can push hair into a shedding phase. This type of loss is usually temporary, and hair often regrows once the body recovers.

Events such as pregnancy, childbirth, discontinuing birth control, or menopause may disrupt hormonal balance and cause short-term hair shedding.

Thyroid disorders, scalp infections, and conditions that lead to scarring—such as lichen planus or certain forms of lupus—can result in permanent hair loss if the follicles are damaged.

Drugs used for cancer therapy, high blood pressure, arthritis, and depression can contribute to hair thinning.

Both can stress the body and temporarily interrupt the hair growth cycle.

Inadequate protein, iron, or other essential nutrients can weaken hair and cause it to thin.

Some degree of shedding is normal and often temporary. While many people accept age-related hair loss without concern, others may feel distressed or lose confidence when the shedding becomes noticeable. Persistent or excessive hair loss should be evaluated properly, as each person’s root cause and suitable treatment plan can differ.
